Travelers might not see a lot of smiling faces among airline staffers over the next few months. Despite May’s slight 0.8% increase in airline employment, airline staffs are getting smaller, thanks to the recent spate of job-cut announcements from carriers. (The most recent was Monday’s news that Midwest airlines would ground its 12 MD-80s and cut 1,200 employees.)

US Airways will start replacing its skycaps with unionized employees at airports nationwide next month so that its new baggage-fee policy won't violate a labor contract.
The skycaps will gradually be replaced by US Airways customer-service agents and eventually by self-service kiosks, said airline spokesman Philip Gee.
